PolCoRe at CEEGS 2015
On October 21-24, the second installment of the Central and Eastern European Game Studies conference took place in Krakow, Poland, bringing together digital game scholars not only from the CEE region, but also from Western Europe, North America and China. Among the main topics were the ontology of digital game as a medium, digital game fan practices, and meta-gaming as co-creation and participation.
PolCoRe member Jaroslav Švelch co-founded the conference and serves as a member of its Steering Committee, as well as its Program Chair. In Krakow, he presented a paper entitled “Simulated interfaces and virtual machines in hacking games”. Jan Švelch presented two papers at the conference: „Distributing Patches and Errata: A Comparative Approach to the Study of Technical Updates for Digital and Analog Games“ and „Who Is the Note-Worthy Fan? – Player Individuality and Community in Official Communication of Mainstream Video Games“ (co-authored with Tereza Krobová).
Jak smysluplně a odpovědně publikovat ve společenských vědách?
Cílem semináře nazvaného Predátoři, lovci a sběrači: Jak smysluplně a odpovědně publikovat ve společenských vědách?, který se konal v Akademickém konferenčním centru 13. října 2015, bylo diskutovat o publikační praxi v Česku v širším mezinárodním kontextu a formulovat praktická doporučení pro orientaci v dnes málo přehledné publikační krajině. Na semináři vystoupil také Václav Štětka ze skupiny PolCoRe.

The Rise of Oligarchs as Media Owners
V prestižním vydavatelství Oxford University Press vyšla kniha Media and Politics in New Democracies: Europe in a Comparative Perspective (link) o vztahu mezi médii a politikou v nových demokratických společnostech v Evropě i jinde ve světě. Autorem kapitoly The Rise of Oligarchs as Media Owners je Václav Štětka ze skupiny PolCoRe.
Digital News Report 2015
Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism při University of Oxford vydal výzkumnou zprávu Digital News Report 2015. Tato zpráva vychází z výzkumu, který od roku 2012 systematicky mapuje vzorce užívání digitálních zpravodajských médií obyvateli vybraných zemí z celého světa. Letos poprvé byla do vzorku zemí zařazena také Česká republika, což přináší unikátní možnost srovnání významu a role digitálních médií při konzumaci zpravodajských obsahů v ČR v mezinárodním měřítku.
Autorem shrnutí výsledků za Českou republiku je Václav Štětka ze skupiny PolCoRe.

Online Deliberation Between the Weak and Strong Public Sphere
PolCoRe member Jernej Amon Prodnik has recently published the article Online Deliberation Between the Weak and Strong Public Sphere in the JeDEM (eJournal of eDemocracy and Open Government) co-authored with Tanja Oblak Črnič. The paper challenges the theoretical assumptions of deliberative communication in online contexts of two empirical case studies in the Slovenian Web sphere.

Games as Activism at the International Comics and Games Festival in Łódź
PolCoRe member Jaroslav Švelch was a featured speaker at the annual International Comics and Games Festival, which took place in Łódź, Poland, on October 3-4. In his talk “Indiana Jones Saves Prague: The wonders of 1980s computer games in Czechoslovakia”, he spoke about 1980s activist computer games made to protest the Czechoslovak Communist regime, while also giving more recent examples of activist computer games.

3C: Commodifying Communication in Capitalism
Jernej Amon Prodnik, a member of PolCoRe group, has recently published the chapter 3C: Commodifying Communication in Capitalism in the book Marx in the Age of Digital Capitalism edited by Christian Fuchs and Vincent Mosco. In the chapter, Jernej Prodnik analyses the commodity-form and commodification from a theoretical, conceptual and historical point of view while emphasizing the main consequences of the global universalisation of the commodity-form for society and social relations.
