The article analyses the use of Facebook by political parties during the campaign for the 2013 Parliamentary Elections in the Czech Republic, as well as the content of communication produced by citizens on political parties‘ Facebook profiles.“
Our member Jaroslav Švelch has co-authored the article “Grammar Nazis never sleep”: Facebook humor and the management of standard written language, which has just been published by Language Policy. Being among the first academic explorations of the Grammar Nazi phenomenon, the article argues that individuals who organize under the title Grammar Nazis on Czech Facebook are usually non-experts, whose activities are driven by standard language ideology, and who associate “grammar” primarily with orthography. Given that the knowledge of orthography is related to one’s education and cultural capital, it thus serves as an instrument of social differentiation.
Člen skupiny PolCoRe Jaroslav Švelch je spoluautorem článku “Grammar Nazis never sleep”: Facebook humor and the management of standard written language, který právě vyšel v časopise Language Policy. Jedná se o jeden z prvních článku o fenoménu Grammar Nazis. Dospívá k závěru, že lidé, kteří se na českém Facebooku sdružují pod hlavičkou Grammar Nazis jsou obvykle laici, jejichž aktivita je však ovlivněna ideologií standardního jazyka a kteří si „gramatiku“ spojují primárně s ortografií (pravopisem). Vzhledem k tomu, že znalost pravopisu souvisí se vzděláním a kulturním kapitálem, slouží tak jako nástroj sociální diferenciace.
Náš člen Václav Štětka moderoval keynote panel na konferenci 25 Years After: The Challenges of Building the Post-Communist Media and Communication Industries, která proběhla 20.-22. listopadu na New York University in Prague. Panelu se zúčastnili Jeffrey Gedmin, bývalý prezident Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Grzegorz Piechota z Gazety Wyborcza a ředitel NYU v Praze Jiří Pehe.
Členové skupiny PolCore prezentovali na konferenci ECREA 2014 v Lisabonu dva příspěvky o politické komunikaci v prostředí sociálních sítí: Too much buzz about nothing? Use of social media as news sources in the Czech Republic (Hladík, Štětka) a Campaigning in a contested space: communication on Facebook party profiles during the 2013 Czech Parliamentary Elections (Štětka, Vochocová, Švelch).
Náš člen Jaromír Mazák prezentoval příspěvek Whither slacktivism? Social media use and political participation in the 2013 Czech Parliamentary Elections na konferenci Forms and Functions of Political Participation in the Digital World na University of Burgundy v Dijonu ve Francii.
Časopis Cyberpsychology: Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace právě publikoval článek Václava Štětky a Jaromíra Mazáka, členů skupiny PolCoRe, o vztahu mezi online a offline politickou participací v kontextu parlamentních voleb 2013.
Náš člen Jaroslav Švelch se účastnil konference New Media Histories v polské Lodži s příspěvkem analyzujícím diskurzy o mikropočítačích a počítačových hrách v socialistickém Československu. Na konferenci vystoupila mimo jiné i přední historička médií Melanie Swalwell z Flinders University, která za počátek digitální „kultury participace“ považuje právě kulturu počítačového hobby v 70. a 80. letech 20. století.
Vedoucí výzkumné skupiny Václav Štětka se podílel na povolebním vysílání České televize. V sobotu 11. října 2014 v přímém přenosu prezentoval data o využití sociálních sítí Facebook a Twitter v kampani do místních zastupitelství. Kromě sledování aktivity vybraných kandidátů z Prahy, Brna a Ostravy a oficiálních účtů deseti celostátních stran nabídl i srovnání s jinými evropskými zeměmi. Říjnové komunální a senátní volby se oproti parlamentním volbám 2013 a volbám do Evropského parlamentu 2014 vyznačovaly celkově menší aktivitou stran v kampani na sociálních sítích i menším zapojením občanů.

CALL FOR CHAPTERS for an edited volume on Social media and political communication in Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of this book is to bring together innovative and current research on the role of social media in transforming the dynamics of political communication. A diversity of empirical national-case studies is welcome.
We particularly encourage comparative studies featuring political actors in the CEE region. Keen interest in the proposal has already been expressed by Routledge to include this volume into their on-going and successful BASEES\Russian and East European Studies.
The deadline for a 400 words abstract and short (3-4 line) biography of author/s is 31 October 2014.
